Spinel

Spinel is a gemstone mineral that has been confused with ruby and sapphire for over 1000 years. Several of the most spectacular spinels ever discovered have been mounted in "crown jewels" and other "jewelry of significance" under the assumption that they were rubies or sapphires. Some spinels are among the most famous gemstones: Among them is the Black Prince's Ruby and the "Timur ruby" in the British Crown Jewels, and the "cote de Bretagne", formerly from the French Crown jewels. The Samarian Spinel is the largest known spinel in the world, weighing 500 carats.
Due to its excellent hardness (8 on Mohs scale) and high clarity spinel is a very fine gem for jewelry of all kinds. Ironically, fine spinel is rarer than the ruby it "imitates" but is less expensive. Because it is so rare, it has hardly had a chance to become popular, and that lack of demand has kept the price low--for now. Alternately, spinel's affordability has led to the misconception that it isn't as valuable as it truly is, and once again spinel ends up being used as a substitute. Spinel is one of few gemstones that require no special treatments; their beautiful, vivid colors and clarity are entirely natural.

The most frequently seen stones in jewelry are the shades yellow or sherry brown, and pink. Clear, pink, blue and honey-yellow varieties of topaz are especially valued. The pink stones so popular in Victorian jewelry were produced by heat-treating golden-brown topaz from Brazil.Blue topaz has become very popular over the years.
